UTAR's rapid growth will benefit all, says
professor
-
The rapid development of Universiti Tunku Abdul
Rahman (UTAR) in the last two years will not only benefit the Chinese community as it
provides affordable education for all, said Harvard University's Prof Dr Tu Wei-Ming
on his first visit to the university.
-
The UTAR International Advisory Council (IAC)
member said he was impressed that the university was built with private resources and
the co-operation of various individuals and different communities.
-
"The first two to three years of setting up a new
university is usually a struggle but to my surprise the facilities of Utar are all
there," said Prof Tu to reporters after visiting the three UTAR's campuses in Sungai
Long, Setapak and Petaling Jaya.
-
Another IAC member, Prof Datuk Dr Lam Sai Kit who
is also President of Asia-Pacific Society for Medical Virology, said he was pleased
to see UTAR's physical expansion and manpower development.
-
"UTAR has managed to attract dynamic lecturers to
teach its courses; it has a very good future. Besides producing undergraduates, it
has developed postgraduate research. These are two important elements in a
university," said Prof Lam.
-
Other UTAR members who visited the university
were Prof Wang Gangwu, Prof Wang Fujia, and Tan Sri Dr Augustine Ong Soon Hock.
-
Accompanying the group were UTAR Council Chairman
Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and UTAR President Tan Sri Datuk Dr Ng Lay Swee.
