UTAR 10th Anniversary Fest attracts big crowd

In conjunction with UTAR 10th Anniversary, UTAR Perak Campus Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) held the UTAR 10th Anniversary Fest at Perak Campus on 18 February 2012 as a celebration activity as well as to raise funds.

Launching the fest, were UTAR Council Chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, Vice President (Internationalisation and Academic Development) Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat, who represented UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, Planning and Development Committee Advisor Tan Sri Dato’ Hew See Tong, and Perak Campus CFS Director Pek Hoo Chun.

In his speech, Tun Dr Ling applauded UTAR staff and students for their efforts in organising the fest. He said that teamwork was essential in organising and coordinating such a mega event.

"As a not-for-profit organisation, UTAR is always mindful of its responsibilities towards the society and community," said Prof Ewe, adding that the university always urged its students and staff to reach out to the society actively through community service and fundraising activities.

According to Mr Pek, the fest aimed to raise funds for UTAR Education Fund and needy school children in the Kampar District.

The event draw flocks of people eager to participate in the various activities. Among them was a charity food fair, where UTAR students, staff and private organisations set up 30 stalls selling food, drinks, games and merchandise. Various mouth-watering local delicacies that sold like hot cakes were the famous Kampar curry-chicken-in-bread, salt-baked chicken and the popular ‘luk-luk’ (skewered steamboat food).

Besides exhibitions, demonstration and campus tour, various competitions were also held for pre-school children to university students. The champion team of science and mathematics quiz was from SMK Malim Nawar. In the public speaking competition, Ipoh SMK Methodist ACS student Vanissa Gangadaran emerged as champion in the school category, while UTAR Foundation student Tsia Kai Li was the champion in the college/university category. In story-telling competition, the champions were SK St. Bernadette’s Convent student Nursyafigah binti Hafiz in the Malay language category, her schoolmate Nor Izhan Fazlin binti Khalid in e English, SJK (T) Ladang Kampar student Durga Devi Chandra in Tamil, and SJK (C) Pei Yuan student Lee Hew Thung in Mandarin. Au way-n won the below-five-year-old colouring competition and Tan Jia Lok, the five-to-six-year-old drawing competition.
