UTAR PR Students Reach Out to the Community

Final-year Public Relations (PR) students of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) launched the Public Relations Campaign as part of UTAR 10th Anniversary activities at UTAR Perak Campus on 15 February 2012.

Present at the launching ceremony was Wong Chin Ho who representing the guest of honour, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Malaysia Dato' Lee Chee Leong and from UTAR were President Ir Professor Academician Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik, Faculty of Arts and Social Science Dean Dr Sebastian K Francis and his Deputy Dean Dr Cheah Phaik Kin and Public Relations Department Head Gan Pei Li.

"UTAR was created by the people for the people. It was a vision realised through the contribution of many people. In return, the university's goal is to produce graduates who are well received by the industry and contribute to the community," said Professor Chuah. He was proud and glad that the students were celebrating the university's anniversary by doing community service activities.

Wong, when delivering Dato' Lee's speech, said that UTAR had been the main driving force for the economy in Kampar as the university's existence had created many job opportunities for the locals; and at the current pace of development, Kampar would definitely emerge as a successful higher education hub in the future.

"The campaign has adopted UTAR's tagline, "Broadening Horizons, Transforming Lives" as its theme to remind us that education is able to transform the lives and broaden the horizons of every individual," said campaign leader Teoh Yik Kee, adding that for that reason the campaign aimed to engage with the community in the celebration of UTAR 10th Anniversary.

The campaign was also part of the final year project of the PR students. They were divided into seven groups for various events and community service projects to be carried out throughout the month of February and March. Each group was represented by a colour and a mascot of that colour. The mascot was a figure 10, the anniversary number, and the multicolour represented unity-in-diversity spirit.

The activities of the campaign included fundraising for the National Kidney Foundation and UTAR Education Fund, community service at aboriginal villages, UTAR history and alumni achievement exhibition, musical drama, secondary school interaction tour, treasure hunt, making mud balls, making a photo montage, and creating a record breaking origami mosaic.
