First Aid Training Programme

The increasing number of deaths due to accidents and criminal violence is staggering. The media also has given much publicity and it has cropped up to such an extent that it has become worrying to the public. As the saying goes, "Better safe than sorry".

With this in mind, the Federation of Private Medical Practitioners' Association Malaysia (FPMPAM) in collaboration with the St.John's Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) conducted a training session for UTAR (Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman) students on 16 November 2008. The training session was held at the Department of Soft Skills Competency from 9am until 1pm. The training was attended by Dr Chooi Yuo Hoo, Mr Steven Wong Tuck Meng, the Deputy Area Commander of St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) and Mr Jeffery Nah Swee Sing. The facilitator of the day, Dr Goh Kay Chee, president elect of the Private Medical Practitioners' Society for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, was also present at the occasion as the guest of honour.

The main objective of the training is to give students a "wake-up call" on the importance of life skills. Furthermore, such training provides an avenue for participants to prepare themselves for emergency situations. On top of that, the training also aims to educate students and to increase awareness of the importance of saving one's life. The Chairperson for First Aid Society in UTAR, Ms.Ng Xing Pei said, "First aid training is essential as we might face emergencies in our daily lives. Through such training, we are able to provide prompt action for the victims. I feel everyone should be equipped with this skill and it is great that we

can learn a skill that can help people," added Ms.Ng Xing Pei.

Mr Jeffrey Nah Swee Sing, the facilitator from St John's Ambulance Malaysia, explained that basic first aid must begin with "DR ABC" where D stands for Danger, R for Response, A for Air, B for Breathing and C for circulation.

There was a short break for all the participants. After the break, there was a Q & A session where students raised many questions. It was then followed by a demonstration where UTAR students learned how to respond during an emergency.

Certificates of appreciation were presented to the participants by the guest of honour, Dr Goh Kay Chee. The final event was the presentation of a token of appreciation by the Manager of the Department of Soft Skills Competency to the distinguished guests. The event ended around 1 pm. It was a meaningful day for the students.
