Career Opportunities in Sin Chew Daily

 

52 UTAR students had a rare privilege to meet with the 'right-hand man' of Sin Chew Daily on 15th November 2010. Held in UTAR, Perak campus, the career talk was organized by the Department of Alumni Relations and Placement with the purpose to enlighten the students of what is it like to work in one of the prestigious journalism agency in Malaysia and the career opportunities available. The 'right-hand man' were represented by Mr. Pooh Ah Lek, Editor-in-Chief and Mr. Kuik Cheng Kang, Exe. Editor-in-Chief, who presented a brief introduction on Sin Chew Daily profiles, job opportunities and the employee benefits. The invaluable talk was attended by 26 students from Chinese Studies and 26 from Journalism.

With its early inception on the 15th February 1929, and possessing 50 years of long history as one of the country most read newspaper in Malaysia, Sin Chew Daily had certainly made make a deep impression on its more than 1.3 million readers, which represented the largest newspaper circulation in Malaysia and in Southeast Asia. Its coverage which include local and international news, commentaries, business, sports, entertainment were undoubtedly familiar by most of the readers. Unquestionably, it is and will always be its uncompromised stand on reporting on controversial or sensitive issues that remain the key reason as the most sought after news portal among the Chinese community.Speaking on the vision of Sin Chew Daily, Mr. Pooh said, "Sin Chew envisioned to transform from a local to a global Chinese Language content media company using printing and digital multimedia platforms". This came into reality when the company became the first company to established the first ever online newspaper on October 1995, complementing the government aspiration to integrate ICT in the social-economic fabric of the nation.

 

  

 


 

The students were also briefed on the benefits of working with the company. Besides receiving professional guidance and learning how to conceptualize like a professional journalist, a fresh graduate stand to earn RM1800.00 per month and works 5 ½ a week with 17 days annual leaves. In addition to the public holidays, the company also observes company holidays and provides fuel allowance to its employees.

A fascinating questions and answers session was held in succession towards the end of the career talk by Mr. Kuik Cheng Kang and Mr. Pooh Ah Lek. The session emphasized on questions such as the basic requirement for recruitment, integrity in disclosing news to the third party, the relationship with i-Sin Chew Daily and in relations to news usage by Guang Ming Jit Poh. Of great interest was the issue on the freedom of speech in Malaysia. "The freedom of speech in Malaysia is better if compared with Singapore. Malaysia government had given freedom of speech to the media. However, some issues remained restricted under the Act of Printing, Act of Defamation and the ISA. Sin Chew Daily practiced no prejudiced to any parties and we had even reported news of the Opposition Parties", Mr Kuik pointed out. Sin Chew's policy is "Cannot convey the truth all the time but shall never lie either", he emphasized when asked on the company policy.
