JANUARY 2011

President's New Year Message 2011

Our university continues to make great strides towards realising its mission of being a premier university.   As we celebrate our achievements in meeting goals set to realise our mission, we must not forget to plan ahead and anticipate the challenges that lie ahead of us as more challenges await us in 2011. By staying united as a university community with the noble aim of educating our youth for nation building, we can meet the new challenges with confidence as a collective force and even turn some of them to opportunities for strengthening our desire to excel.

Our University can continue to be strong, steadfast and resilient to forge ahead with every member of UTAR community contributing to achieving our noble aim and common mission.  Every member here includes you for you are very much an essential part of our growing institution that develop individuals, shape minds, and create and disseminate new knowledge for public good.

May I take this opportunity to highlight some university developments in which we all can take pride.  Our Perak Campus is expanding and Phase Two of its development has already begun with a new grand hall in construction and the hall is expected to be completed in the middle of 2012 in time for the 10th anniversary celebration of the University.   UTAR continues to enhance its academic programmes and develop new ones and the University now offers close to 100 programmes, which is big leap compared to the initial eight honours degree programmes the University began with in June 2002.

To commemorate its 10th anniversary in 2012, the University has begun planning a year-long anniversary celebration with a lot of activities beginning this year and climaxing in August 2012 in our Perak Campus in Kampar to mark this one-decade milestone.  So, the University will need all the support and help it can get from its community.  You as the alumni can definitely play a part by providing ideas, offering to serve as members of organising committees of the event and activities, participating in the activities or helping to get support and contributions to make the commemorative event a grand success.  With current information and communication technologies, you can even provide assistance to help the University remotely and from a distance at anytime and anywhere.

Stay connected with the University by keeping abreast with the progressive development of the University and by keeping in touch the University, especially with the alumni liaison representatives and the Department of Alumni Relations and Placement, that acts as a bridge between you and the university, providing information pertinent to you and organising activities like UTAR Ball, Alumni Homecoming, Graduation Dinner for maintaining the bond between us and career fairs to provide a platform for fresh graduates, graduating students and you to explore career and internships opportunities with prospective employers.

The University always welcomes your active participation in its activities and development and looks forward to your continued and unreserved support in helping the University to achieve its educational mission for the benefit of the nation and society.

With this hope, the University extends to each and every of you its warmest regards and best wishes for a Happy New Year.

Ir. Professor Dato' Dr. Chuah Hean Teik
