Up-Close-And-Personal interaction with UTAR President and staffs

 

2000 final year students soaked themselves with the invaluable wisdom imparted by the President of UTAR in the 'Tea Meeting With The President' held on 23 February 2011 at Perak campus and 24 February 2011 at PJ campus and KL campus

9 faculties participated in the Tea Meeting which gave them a rare personal encounter with the President to received expert guidance and tips on how to be prepared for the working world such as the knowledge on interview skill, criteria to make important decisions in employment and statistic of Malaysian competitiveness in the world.

Ms. Sum Kwai Seong, who is also the Head of Department of Alumni Relations and Placement (DARP) introduce the key roles of DARP which encompass Job Placement, Industrial Training, Post Graduate Studies Workshop and Electronic Newsletter that the students can take advantage of.

She further reminded them that they are an important link between UTAR and the alumni. 'It is important that you update your contacts with UTAR to inform you of any new developments,' stressed Ms Sum as she prompted them to remain connected with their Alma Mater to acquire regular updates via Alumni Portal.

In the following talk, UTAR President Ir. Prof. Dato' Dr. Chuah Hean Teik excitedly advised the students of choosing employment wisely. According to him choosing employment encompass making important choices and decisions, and in particular is having the right interview skills.

Prof Chuah went into great lengths to explain the criteria of what it takes to become interview savvy. Interview skill, according to him, revolves around meticulous preparation of resume which include academic records, co-curriculum activities and Industrial Attachment Experience, and a fundamental study on the company's background.

Punctuality, appropriate dressing, focus, be truthful, polite is some of the important factors that determine the outcome of the interview stressed Prof Chuah. Another crucial factor is to communicating clearly with your interviewer.

"Understand the question and think before you answer" he affirmed.

 

Using power point presentation, he further described the international rank that Malaysia stands in the recent years. According to him, Malaysia ranked 23rd in the World bank Doing Business 2010 Report but gradually pick up the momentum to become 10th in the World Competitiveness Scoreboard 2010.

 

Organized by the Department of Alumni Relations And Placement, the Tea Talk had not only prepared the final year students to know what to expect in the working world, it also strived to instill close interaction with the UTAR President, Deans and the staffs of UTAR as witnessed during the refreshment.
