JUNE 2011

A Match of Fun & Reunion

Badminton sport is commonly associated with health, agility and stamina. On 15 February 2011, however, the sport went beyond the common scopes and become an excellent mean of reuniting UTAR alumni and students at Taman Mayang Badminton Hall, Selangor.

The clash of UTARrians with the alumni against students from the Faculty of Engineering and Science (Setapak Campus) and Faculty of Accountancy and Management (Sg. Long Campus) began vigorously with each player exhibiting amazing sportsman?s skills as they maneuvered zealously to defend their title against persistent opponents.

Altogether, there were seven matches and both the alumni and the students defended their place with neither side budged. Nonetheless, only one champion emerged, and by 10.45am, the Klang Valley teams secured the title in roars of triumph, as the match came to an end.

"It was an exciting game. The alumni were indeed challenging opponents."

"We have two national badminton players participating in the match, Law Yew Thien and Yee Quih Siang," said Lean Thean Yew, a member of Alumni Liaison Representative who co-organized the badminton match with Foo Chit Wan, a student from Faculty of Engineering and Science gleefully.

Yee Quih Siang, according to Lean, was already in the national back-up team even before he joined UTAR and graduated in 2009 with a First Class Honors Degree.

"Overall, it was a fantastic game of reuniting and getting to know one another better. The main objective of organizing this activity is for sharing purpose; not only as a sport game. We hope to share vital values like positive attitude and sportsmanship spirit with each other," said Lean.

"We are looking forward for another badminton match in July 2011. All the teams will be participating too. We hope to see more students joining in coming months. Last but not least, we thank those who participated in the match this time," added Lean excitedly. To ensure such meaningful games to be carried on in future, arrangement has been made with Ms. Sum Kwai Seong, Head of Department of Alumni Relations and Placement to confirm the event.

The friendly badminton match, as they called, witnessed 30 participants: 12 students from Klang Valley campuses; 12 alumni and Alumni Liaison representatives; and a few number of supporters. Among the supporters spotted include Ms. Sum Kwai Seong and Mr. Lim Swea Jen from Department of Student Affairs.
