APRIL 2013

President Advises Graduating Students

UTAR Department of Alumni Relations and Placement organises tea meeting for each batch of graduating students to meet the President Ir Prof Academician Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik.

Tea meeting sessions for students graduating in March 2013 were held at Perak Campus on 20 February, and Petaling Jaya Campus and Kuala Lumpur Campus on 26 February.  As usual, the faculty deans and other senior academic staff attended the sessions with Prof Chuah.

'Convocation is an occasion of celebration for not only the graduands alone but also their parents, relatives and friends,' said Prof Chuah.  He advised graduating students to be patient and not to throw a tantrum at their family members during the coming convocation and spoil the joyous occasion.

On looking for employment, Prof Chuah advised students to customise their CV for each job interview as different employers had different requirements.  Students should highlight the parts relevant to a particular employer, use high-quality folder for their documents and not to use jargons in their writings.   They should be properly attired for and be polite during the interview, and avoid asking for too high a salary.  He further advised that joining either small or large company had its own advantages and disadvantages.

Prof Chuah reminded the students to continue to embrace in their career lives the six UTAR philosophical values of Virtue and Morality, Knowledge and Intellect, Physical and Mental Health, Sociality and Humanitarianism, Aesthetics and Harmony, and Creativity and Innovation.

He announced that UTAR was ranked 64th in employer reputation by QS Asian University Rankings 2012, and urged students to continue to upkeep the good name of their alma mater, refrain from bad habits, avoid corruption, and stay healthy to take on challenges in the future.
