JULY 2014

ALR Gathering July 2014

Peals of laughter filled the meeting room at the PJ campus on 28 June 2014 as alumni members, students, lecturers and staff greeted each other and mingled around the mini exhibition booth at the Alumni Liaison Representatives (ALR) Gathering 2014.

Organised by the Department of Alumni Relations and Placement (DARP), the ALR Gathering 2014 aims to strengthen the alumni connection with the alma mater. It functions as an interactive platform for our alumni to network and fosters the spirit of togetherness and unity in the UTAR community.

Present at the ALR Gathering were the UTAR's senior management team members which included UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik, Vice-President for R&D and Commercialisation Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei and Vice-President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Assoc Prof Dr Teh Chee Seng.

In his address, Prof Chuah said, "I hope that as many alumni as possible will come forward to contribute to UTAR's progress. The contribution can be in many ways, ranging from holding talks to donation to the UTAR Education Fund." There were loud cheers to Prof Chuah's elaborations on the new campus at Sg Long, the achievements of UTAR alumna Dr Hue Seow Mun as the youngest PhD holder in the country by the Malaysia Book of Records and our student's win in the student premier technology competition; the National Microsoft Imagine Cup 2014.

The activities for the afternoon event included dance performances by the UTAR Dance Club, video presentation on "Down Memory", the President of UTAR Alumni Association Malaysia Ng Yi Ming's slideshows on the alumni association activities and the talk sessions by two alumni namely; Fan Ya Fu and Loh Yoke Fai.

Ng deliberated on the objectives of the alumni association and urged the alumni to join the association and support its activities. Fan, a Public Relations (PR) graduate talked about his career experiences and advocated on having the right mindset to learn new possibilites. Loh, who is also a PR graduate spoke on his successful application for a Korean Government scholarship to do his master at the Kyunghee University in Seoul.

Adding to the camraderie at the gathering were the happy memories and remembrances gleaned from the photos displays of previous ALR gatherings, posters of successful alumni, news reports on UTAR alumni and photos on the progressive construction work of the new Sungai Long campus. There was also the Centre for Extension Education (CEE) booth with buntings, course brochures and leaflets.

A memorable end to the ALR Gathering was the soothing acapella (vocal music without instruments) performance by a 7-member group who comprised three alumni and four students and all of them are from the Faculty of Engineering and Science (FES).

Both Judith Flora, a graduating student from Kenya and Tammy Kee, an FICT graduate cherished the ALR Gathering as it fostered networking and reminiscing the old times together.Kee said, "It feels good to catch up on the progress of my alma mater. For me, once a Utarian, always a Utarian!"
