Balance is the Key to Success

                                                      Lee Woan Shiang

Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Chemical Engineering

August 2013 Convocation

Knowledge is power but experience is equally important. This is the main reason that drives me to pursue a part-time master's degree after completing my degree studies in 2013. Part-time studies give me the flexibility work and study at the same time.

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to Dr Chia Fah Choy for his enlightening advice and guidance. He was the one who encouraged me to take up part time postgraduate studies while I am still working.

Before joining the programme, I was inspired by the success story of Beijing Olympics Bird Nest Stadium. I was impressed by the high level of professionalism and responsiveness demonstrated by the project management team. In a fast-paced environment, they were able to manage resources effectively and achieved their objectives with suitable approaches. Therefore, I decided to learn more about project management skills that I could apply to make my work more productive.

It is extremely challenging to attend classes when you have a full-time job. My Master's course mates and I are forced to juggle our time between studies, job and family commitment. We have a packed schedule and little time for social life. However, this shortcoming has motivated us to use our time more efficiently.

Stress is part of our daily lives. As time went by, it was becoming increasingly difficult for me to cope with a hectic schedule. Fortunately, I have understanding and supportive professors who shared with me their personal experiences and tips on managing time more efficiently. I learnt that stress management is equally as important to reduce stress resulting from work. Stress can be positive as it motivates us to finish our assignment within then given deadline.

Apart from that, I enjoy the impromptu discussions and weekly oral presentations which have a natural style of delivery. We are often asked to say a few words about topics in working life. It is important to stay calm to be able to present clearly in unexpected situations. It is a good opportunity for us who are different industries to share work-related experiences.

My first job was a project engineer and I am now an assistant manager in UTAR. After a year of working, I learn to be optimistic and to keep an open attitude. A job that is unrelated to my degree seems to open up new opportunities. I am confident that my current job will help me to become a well-rounded employee.
