MAY 2016

My time in UTAR

Chong Kok Yung

BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (HONS)

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Batch of March 2016

I still remember that was October 2011, when I left my job as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician in GE Engine Services Malaysia and joined UTAR as a year 1 student in Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechanical Engineering. It was tough to make that decision but until now, I still believe it was the best decision that I have ever made in my life.

During my first year, I took up Korean Language subject as I have deep interest in learning Korean. It was fun and enjoy during the lesson as the lecturer, Ms. Jinny was very patient and kind in teaching us. I have also met a lot of friends who were having the same interest as me. We developed strong relationship even though we came from different courses!

Besides, I had also took part in My First Robot Competition during my first year. It was a great experience as I was given opportunities to learn how to program and build a robot. Our hard work were paid off when we were awarded with 2nd Runner up in the competition!

I must admit that I paid a lot of effort in academic. However, while studying hard, I also played hard. I took part in a lot of activities in UTAR such as UTAR sport carnival bowling competition, UTAR Halloween Night, Zombie Night and so on. Through these activities, I met a lot of friends from different courses and it made my university life more exciting and memorable.

In a blink of an eye, I was already in my final year. I participated in a lot of soft skill programmes in Year 3 and Year 4 as I believe that these skills such as presentation skill, time management skill, leadership skill are very important when we join the society as a Graduate Engineer. I feel appreciated as my soft skills are improved from day to day through the guidance from lecturers.

On the other hand, I was lucky to be given an opportunity to have my internship in Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) department of Syarikat Pembenaan Yeoh Tiong Lay Sdn. Bhd. Through the internship, I understand better about the M&E services in construction site and the responsibilities of a M&E engineer in every construction project. It was also great to have known many other engineers in this company.

Knowing that I was going to graduate soon, I tried to create more beautiful moments with my course mates. We cherished our time together in every lesson and outside activity. We even participated in first UTAR Flea Market to experience how it feels to run a business on our own. It was great that our business was very successful!

Finally, we were at the Dewan Tun Dr. Ling Liong Sik, for the day we had waited for so long. It was 26th March 2016, our convocation day! Thinking back from now, the four years of university life in UTAR was like a dream, as every moment was just so wonderful. It was wonderful because of the great lecturers, great university and great bunch of friends.

With my hard work, I was awarded with Book Prize as I am graduated from Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechanical Engineering with CGPA of 4.00. I was also awarded with USSDC because of my active participation in UTAR soft skill programmes. However, I would like to share these awards with my parents as I will not be who I am today without the encouragement and support from my parents. It was their love which made me strong when I face any difficulties and challenges during these 4 years in university. Dad and mum, I love you!

On 16th April 2016, I was honoured to be nominated by UTAR as the best engineering

student to be awarded with IEM Gold Medal Award 2015 with other 25 top engineers from different universities during 57th IEM Annual Dinner. With all the knowledge and skills that I

gained from UTAR, I hope that I will be able to contribute to the society and UTAR, as an engineer or even as an entrepreneur in the future.

Lastly, I would like to thank everyone who has walked into my life all these while. Sometimes, I really wish to back to the wonderful university life in UTAR. Anyway, I believe this is not the end. It is now the time for us to show the outside world how good are we, UTARian. I love you, dad, mum, brothers, sister, family, friends and so on. Not to forget, UTAR, you are always my Choice!
