Alumni celebrates CNY with President

Gong xi fa cai!

UTAR celebrated Chinese New Year (CNY) with its alumni in Sungai Long Campus on 19 January 2019. The CNY celebration was part of the annual UTAR Alumni Get Together with President for 2019.

Joining the celebration were UTAR Chancellor Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and his spouse Toh Puan Ena Ling, President Ir Prof Academician Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik, Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Prof Ir Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Alumni Association President Koh Fook Huat, UTAR alumni, staff and students.

In the spirit of embracing a new year, Prof Chuah shared all the achievements of UTAR in 2018. This includes achieving significant ranking such as #99 in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2018, Top #600 in THE World University Rankings 2018, #101-150 in Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings 2018, and 111-120 for Times Higher Education Asia-Pacific University Rankings 2018.

While being modest about the ranking, Prof Chuah also mentioned that he sees the ranking as a sign that UTAR is in the right direction and he was thankful to all the parties who were involved in the effort, "Thank you to our dear chancellor, staff, students and alumni for making 2018 a very eventful year. Whatever you went through in 2018 will only make you a better person. A special thank you to our council members and board of trustees who offered their time and expertise without expecting any return. I must also thank all the strong supporters and benefactors who have helped through charitable donation both in cash and kind as well as support and technical advice. All the achievements require a collective effort."

"Our relationship with UTAR should not be disconnected after graduating. In fact, we should come back more often to participate in events and stay connected with our alma mater. Do follow UTAR Alumni Association social media for more updates on recent events and activities at UTAR," said Koh. In his speech, he also announced that UTAR alumni can join the association with a lifetime membership for just RM100.

A former Student Representative Council committee Yew See Li joined the night to meet up with the staff from the Department of Student Affairs. "I wish UTAR will have more students so that it will prosper in the future. I also wish everyone a better, wealthier and happier life," said the 2016 Accounting graduate.

Another alumna Hew See Wai has a wish for her juniors, "I wish them all the best. My advice as a senior, please do not stay up too late and always prepare early for examination." She also came to visit the KB Block in Sungai Long Campus, which was not built when she was still studying in UTAR.

In conjunction with the CNY Alumni dinner is the introduction of a mobile app for all alumni. UTAR, in partnership with Silverlake, introduced the hi-hive Lifestyle Community Ecosystem for UTAR alumni. This hi-hive app promotes community networking with multiple functionalities for interactive sharing and posting of information among a ready network of members. Its simple and user friendly interface allows users to easily create, maintain and personalise this community app to suit users' preferences.
