DR Loo has a PhD in Media and Communication from the University of Melbourne. He is an active researcher interested in ethnicity, nationalism, heritage and tourism in and beyond multicultural Southeast Asia. He is a recipient of three research grants funded by the Ministry of Education Malaysia through the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS): i) “Peranakan as An Analytical Concept for Ethnic Identity: Embodiment of Local Knowledge in Malaysian Heritage” (2016 - 2019, completed), ii) “Constructing A Cultural Map of Food Transculturalism Among Malaysian Youths” (2020 - 2022, ongoing),  iii), “Oral History and the Heritage Continuation of the Peranakan Chinese in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia”  (2020 - 2022, ongoing). All three research grants employ ethnographic methods and involve collecting visual ethnographic works as data. His latest work entitled “(Re)placing The Terengganu Peranakan Chinese as “Mek Awang”: Making Chinatown and Heritagising The Peranakan Identities in Kuala Terengganu” will be published in Kajian Malaysia in 2021.
