Dr. Rubina Bahar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at UTAR. Dr. Bahar holds a Ph.D. and a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore. Her research interests mainly focus on solar desalination, membrane distillation, and energy efficiency in water treatment processes, particularly in tropical climates like Malaysia. Dr. Bahar's research is highly interdisciplinary, combining aspects of renewable energy, materials science, and environmental sustainability, with a strong emphasis on water treatment technologies suited to tropical climates. Dr Bahar has authored a number of relevant publications in high impact factor journals including  Desalination,Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments, Journal of Cleaner Production, Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells etc.

Dr. Bahar is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in the UK. She is also serving as the Academic Liaison Officer for the UTAR IMechE student chapter and received  the best Academic Liaision Officer for IMechE Malaysia in 2022. Dr. Bahar was awarded the Global Engineering Design Solution Challenge 2019 by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), UK. This prestigious award recognizes significant contributions to engineering design that address global challenges, particularly in innovative and sustainable solutions. In 2019, Dr. Bahar and her team developed an innovative engineering design solution aimed at solving challenges in water desalination and energy efficiency.

Dr.  Bahar is committed to community service alongside her academic pursuits. She participated in the Greater Gombak Animal Shelter Project for stray animals, an initiative under the Office of the Deputy Rector (Student Development and Alumni) in Inetrnational Islamic University Malaysia (Gombak Campus). A significant contribution by Dr Bahar's team was the design of a Rainwater Harvesting System (RWHS) to provide a sustainable water source for the shelter's residents.
