KIRKBY International College, Cyberjaya, recently hosted its first awards presentation ceremony for a digital storytelling programme.

Up to 200 students from the first degree teacher training programme (Program Latihan Perguruan Peringkat Ijazah Pertama) in four institutions — Kirkby International College, UCSI University, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and SEGi University — took part.

These students will graduate in 2016 and become English teachers in primary schools nationwide.

The four private institutions of higher education have designed interesting activities to make learning English fun and engaging for these students, with Kirkby International College organising the digital storytelling programme.

Students were assigned into 20 groups with each group taking charge of a short story and turning it into a script which was then made into a short film.

Kirkby International College president Bismillah Kader said students need to be motivated to take part in activities outside the classroom. They also had to be encouraged to be creative learners.

“Creative thinking is important in any learner’s experience.

“They are also strengthening their English communication and team-playing skills while taking part in this programme,” said Bismillah.

Eleven awards were given out during the ceremony with Nursyaida Nasuha Rosman winning Best Director for the short film How She Met Me while Best Script went to Vidhiyavaani Kannapiran for The Promise, which also won the Best Film award.
