The Master of Arts (Chinese Studies) program provides candidates with the opportunity to pursue their interest in research on Chinese language and literature, culture and society, and history and philosophy. Candidates will study various aspects of Chinese civilization to better understand China and its influence on its neighbors. This postgraduate program, structured towards academic performance and skills in critical thinking and inquiry, will produce graduates to cater to the needs of various professions inside and outside the country. It is a specialized program consisting of either an exclusive research-based or a combination of research and coursework mode of study. Throughout the program, candidates are encouraged to participate and attend enhancement courses such as Project/Dissertation Writing Workshops or Lecture Series.

 

MODE OF STUDY

 

1. By Research

Master of Arts (Chinese Studies)

 

The research-based program entails a specific program of research under appropriate supervision. Research-based programs generally have the objective of training candidates in research methodology and techniques, and in the critical evaluation of the research work carried out. Candidates are also required to apply and evaluate methodologies and techniques. An original contributed thesis to the body of knowledge in the field undertaken is required for award of the Master's degree by research.

 

2. By Mixed Mode

Master of Chinese Studies

 

This structure comprises a major coursework component with a research component written up as a dissertation. Satisfactory completion of both components is required for the award of the degree. The coursework component offers subjects which provide candidates with an interdisciplinary and liberal arts background in Chinese culture and Southeast Asian Chinese society. Typically, the coursework component consists of two core subjects and four elective subjects. There will be a specified amount of contact time which will take the form of seminars, tutorials and lectures. Assessment for most subjects includes individual and group assignment work, case-studies and examinations. Candidates may be required to give seminars and write reports on their research.

Master of Arts (Chinese Studies)

Upon completion of the programme, students will be able:

 

1.   To have the deep understanding of relevant Chinese Studies areas.

2.   To master the practical knowledge and skills which are responsive to the relevant communities needs.

3.   To analyse the societal issues and interpret the trends and changes of Chinese Studies in China in general and in Malaysia in particular.

4.   To provide the qualities of professionalism with ethical codes in Chinese Studies which are on par with the counterparts of Chinese Studies in the region.

5.   To demonstrate the competence in managing the issues of Chinese Studies effectively and efficiently in multi-cultural environment.

6.   To acquire critical thinking in Chinese Studies and solving the problems related to a specific area of Chinese Studies.

7.   To apply the research abilities in lifelong learning by completed a dissertation of high quality.

 

 

Master of Chinese Studies

Upon completion of the programme, students will be able:

 

  1. To demonstrate knowledge in major areas of Chinese studies, such as language and linguistics, literature, philosophy, history, culture and society in proper perspective.
  2. To conduct research with a wide range of research methods and skills in various application domains.
  3. To justify the trends, changes and interaction of societal issues in relevance with Chinese Studies in Malaysia and abroad.
  4. To engage in research activities with recognition of ethics and social responsibilities.
  5. To communicate and work effectively with peers or members of society.
  6. To identify and solve problems with flexible skills in line with national and international practices.
  7. To maintain lifelong learning in Chinese Studies in accordance with the rapid changing world.
  8. To apply management or entrepreneur knowledge or experience in applicable domains.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

 

Academic Requirement *

(1) a Bachelor's Degree with Honours and CGPA of 2.75 and above or a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA of 2.75 and above in a related field from UTAR; or

(2) a Bachelor's Degree with Honours and CGPA of 2.50 and above but less than 2.75 or a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA of 2.50 and above but less than 2.75 in a related field from UTAR and subjected to rigorous internal assessment; or

(3) a Bachelor's Degree with Honours and CGPA of 2.00 and above but less than 2.50 or a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA of 2.00 and above but less than 2.50 in a related field from UTAR, show evidence of at least five (5) years of relevant working experience and subjected to rigorous internal assessment; or

(4) any other academic qualifications equivalent to (1), (2) or (3) from another recognised University as approved by the Senate

*For conditional admission, the applicant is required to completed and obtain a “pass” grade in any 2 (two) courses from major courses or major elective courses from Bachelor of Arts (Honors) Chinese Studies programme under NGMP module before enrolling to Master of Chinese Studies/ Master of Arts (Chinese Studies) programme.

 

Language Requirement

- credit in SMP/O-level/UEC Chinese Language Examination

- pass in STPM Chinese Language; 

- Level 5 (minimum 210 marks, maximum 300 out of 300 marks) in China’s New Hàny? Shu?píng K?oshì (New HSK)/ New Chinese Proficiency Test (from 2010 onwards);

- Level 5 in Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) (from 2013 onward)

   

 English Language Requirement for International Students **

- IELTS : 5.0  (CEFR  Level B1)  

- TOEFL : 410-413/ TOEFL iBT Score 34 ,    

- Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) :180 (CEFR Level C1)   

- Pearson Test of English (PTE) : 36

- Cambridge English Advance (CAE) :160 (CEFR Level B2)    

- MUET Band 3

**An International applicant who does not fulfil the English Language requirement will be considered for Conditional Offers, whereby the applicant will undergo a Preparatory Course. Applicant should then register and sits for either IELTS, TOEFL or MUET and achieve the score as per programme standard/ UTAR English requirement within 12 months from the date of entry into Malaysia.
