What is VASI?

VALUE ADDED SERVICES AND IMPROVEMENT (VASI) IN THE ADMINISTRATIVE/SUPPORT & GENERAL STAFF PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL FORM

1.   Background

1.1 UTAR aspires to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement philosophy among its staff members.  Thus, the University introduced VASI in the staff performance appraisal system and allocated 10% of weightage.

1.2 SMC approved the staff performance appraisal forms for administrative staff in December 2010 and such form is used since January 2011.

1.3 It was noted that some staff are not sure what it means by VASI and what to put as their VASI contribution in the appraisal form.

2.   Some ideas on VASI

DHR would like to share the understanding of VASI with staff members.  The below are some ideas from DHR on VASI:

VASI is similar to that of Kaizen (改善) in the Japanese philosophy which means "improvement" or "change for the better".  Thus, VASI can be referred as any act of improving the current situation or making deliberate effort for continually improvement with positive outcome in the workplace which would bring value added services to the customers, staff members, cost saving, improvement in internal work processes, problem solving and other situational leadership role which the staff has contributed during the appraisal period.
